The history behind Humphries Timber Ltd. dates back as far as 1919 when the Humphries family started a haulage business called H.E. Humphries Ltd. That haulage business continued successfully until 1944 when Harry Humphries, aged 17, was forced to takeover when his father died.
From that point on the business grew and branched out into dealing with demolition sites where haulage included timber. With the addition of Harry's son David came greater expansion and in 1969 the company branched out further to start selling new timber and building materials. 1972 saw the purchase of a railway line in Wednesbury and the building of a saw mill. It also saw the addition of a crane to the site utilizing those lines.
Continued expansion saw the company buy Miller Bridges and Richard Garbet. This preceded the formation of Monway Timber Merchants, which would eventually become Humphries Timber Ltd. today.
With a real focus on being green, environmentally friendly, recycling, and operating as close to carbon neutral as possible, Humphries Timber Ltd. are proud of the green heritage they are built upon. The company was originally formed to deal with the products nobody wanted from demolition work. Instead of it being burnt or dumped we collected and re-sold the wood. All new wood is also sourced from sustainable forests meaning customers can buy with confidence from a green company.
Originally started as a family business the staff were treated as such with many spending their entire working lives with the company. To this day we have employees who walked out of school and into a job for life showing not only our commitment to them, but their desire to stay with us meaning we must be doing something right.
The mix of reclaimed and new timber has clearly worked over the years allowing us to survive where others have fallen by the way side. And we continue to grow our business and products on offer to meet the new demands customers always place on us.
Whatever you are looking for timber is our speciality; be it new, reclaimed, or something specific you are after, if we don't have it we can probably find it for you.
